In the philosophy of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), this seasonal shift corresponds to the Metal Element — the energy of refinement, clarity, and letting go.

Metal governs the ability to discern what is precious and what must be released, both physically and emotionally. Just as the alchemist extracts pure metal from stone, this element invites us to refine our own inner essence — to find truth, order, and beauty within simplicity.


The Energy of Metal

In TCM, the Lung and Large Intestine are the organs associated with the Metal Element. Together, they mirror the rhythm of taking in and letting go.


  • The Lungs draw in fresh Qi — our breath of life, inspiration, and connection to the present moment.

  • The Large Intestine releases what the body no longer needs, maintaining clarity and cleanliness within.


When balanced, the Metal Element gives us a strong sense of self-worth, integrity, and the ability to honor life’s cycles of beginnings and endings. We feel organized, inspired, and emotionally light. When out of balance, we may experience grief, rigidity, perfectionism, or a sense of disconnection from meaning or purpose.


Signs of Metal Imbalance


You may be feeling the effects of Metal imbalance if you notice:

  • Sadness or lingering grief that’s hard to release

  • Shallow breathing or respiratory weakness

  • Skin issues or dryness

  • Constipation or sluggish digestion

  • A sense of loss, emptiness, or disconnection

  • Over-attachment to routines, rules, or perfection


The good news? Metal imbalance often responds beautifully to ritual and intention. This element thrives on simplicity, structure, and reverence — all qualities that can be cultivated through mindful daily practice.


Rituals to Balance the Metal Element


1. Breathwork to Clear and Inspire

The lungs are our first interface with the world — each breath a renewal.Try a simple cleansing breath ritual:Sit comfortably. Inhale deeply through the nose, drawing in fresh, healing energy. Exhale slowly through the mouth, imagining old emotions or stagnant energy leaving your body.Repeat for several minutes, allowing your body to settle into a natural rhythm of release and replenishment.

Bonus: Diffuse essential oils like eucalyptus, pine, or frankincense to open the lungs and uplift the spirit.


2. Decluttering as a Sacred Practice

Metal energy thrives on purity and clarity.Choose one small space — a drawer, your desk, or your closet — and intentionally let go of what no longer serves you. As you do, thank each item before releasing it. Feel how creating space outside of yourself mirrors the lightness you crave within.


3. Journaling for Release

Grief and sadness are natural emotions of Metal, but when unexpressed, they can harden into emotional residue.Try this journaling prompt:

“What am I ready to let go of in order to breathe more freely?”

Write freely for 10 minutes. When finished, you can tear or safely burn the page as a symbolic act of release.


4. Nourish with Metal-Season Foods

Autumn foods that support the Lungs and Large Intestine are pungent, white, and lightly warming:Garlic, onion, radish, ginger, pears, lotus root, daikon, and white mushrooms all strengthen Metal’s clarity and dispersing action.Warm soups, steamed vegetables, and herbal teas with astragalus or licorice root help nourish Qi as the weather cools.


5. Connect with the Breath of Nature

Step outside during early morning or dusk — times when the Metal element is strongest.Breathe in the crisp air, observe the shifting colors of the leaves, and notice the sense of quiet introspection that nature embodies.Let this remind you that release is not loss — it’s an act of refinement, a return to essence.

When Metal is in balance, you feel centered, clear, and capable of honoring your own worth. You can let go of the past without bitterness and move forward with a sense of reverence and trust.
